Ever met a mermaid in your life? No, some people believe they exist. Mainly the pirates from a long forgotten time, claimed to have seen them. Only they forgot to mention their eyesight wasn't so good any more. What they actually saw were manatees. Giant, slow moving softies the graze the sea floor like cows. Not so strange that they are more commonly know as sea cows.

Here in Niörd Seafari we house two different types of manatees. The first enclosure gives a home to the best know of all, the West Indian manatees, commenly found in the Caribbean. A second slightly larger tank houses their cousins from the other side of th world. Here the Australian dugongs swim slowly passed the glass walls of the underwater viewing area.

Come and admire these gentle giants while they do what they do best: eating sea grass.

Species housed in Manatee Cove:

Dugong - Dugong Dugon
West Indian Manatee - Trichechus manatus
