Southern Islands focusses on the small rocky islands that can be found between the African continent and the frozen desert of the South Pole. The biggest enclosure gives home to our group of elephant seals. These lazy giants spend almost the entire day sunbathing between the rocks and only take a dip when it's feeding time.

Luckily their seems to be more activity in the second pool of the Islands. A large group of roguish rockhopper penguins steal the show. Flying through the water chasing each other, looking at the guest through the high glass windows of the underwater viewing area, or taking a sandbath on the beach. In short, rockhoppers are always busy and are a joy to watch.

As a bonus, this section also contains a small aviary. Here we house a single petrel and two albatrosses. All three birds were found on desolated beaches with wing injuries. And although they still manage some short flights, there flying abilities are no longer good enough to survive in the wild; so they found a home here in Niörd.

So do not forget to bring a visit to the Southern Islands when you're wandering through Niörd Seafari.
